Leather Furniture - Why Is It So Expensive?

If you are serious about getting leather sofas then you should at least know where your leather is coming from. When you are going shopping for leather you will be seeing all kinds of prices, you need to be prepared to make your decision. The first thing you need to do is research, research, research. Get online and learn the different types of leather and leather grades they use to make furniture. See how much they would cost you and what you are interested in. After you have done that and you know what range you are looking at you can then begin to go to showrooms confident and ready to make your choice. You can start off by learning how to tell the difference between top grain, full grain, split grain and the lowest quality boded leather.

If you put aside a large amount of money for leather sofas then you can actually choose something that is made from the best leather which is full grain. This is very expensive and very beautiful but there is a downside to this. It is the most fragile type there is and needs much more care then the rest of the grades of leather. So if you are looking for the best of the best you might want to reconsider.

The second and most favorable type is the top grain leather. This is also more common and more preferable than it's higher grade. Top grade leather looks more uniform than Full grain. People like this more even if they can afford the higher grade it doesn't wear out as quick and is also tougher and more durable. It is better for those who have children or for those who will spend a lot of time on them.

Split grain leather is also very well known and also well liked by many consumers. Furniture made from split grain is the most affordable of all and also offers about the same durability. This is the leather that is used for everything you see that says "genuine leather".

Another type of leather which isn't often used to make large pieces of furniture is bonded leather. It even sounds cheap if you think about it. They use the leftover pieces from the hide that are way too little to make furniture.

Top grain, Full, grain, split grain and also bonded leather might be a few terms you should know when shopping for any leather.
